Supporting the Election Rigging Response Act

First, Sierra Forward supports the California Citizens Redistricting Commission (CCRC). We think such non-partisan commissions should be the law of the land.

Unfortunately, they are not.

In a highly unusual move, Texas has responded to orders from Donald Trump and done a mid-decade redistricting designed to move five congressional districts from blue to red. In the process, Black and Latino are being completely disenfranchised. And unfortunately, similar moves are underway in Ohio, Indiana, Florida, and Missouri.

Sierra Forward does not believe California should remain idle while Republican-controlled states are gerrymandering the 2026 election. Instead, we need to rise to a challenge that threatens the very existence of our Republic.

Thus, Sierra Forward applauds the Legislature’s passage of Election Rigging Response Act, which will put on the November ballot a redrawn congressional map that offsets the unfair advantage Texas is trying to create. The Act calls on all states to commit to fair and impartial maps, but levels the playing field in an environment where extreme politics cannot be left unchallenged.

Most importantly, the Act preserves California’s award-winning redistricting reforms and reaffirms the California Redistricting Commission’s authority to draw congressional districts after the next census in 2030.
This question will be put to California voters on November 4 as Proposition 50. Major Republican donors like Charles Munger Jr. have already started mailing campaigns and have vowed to plow millions into defeating the ballot measure, so while there is outrage at what Texas has done, it is far from certain that California will be able to level the playing field. To that end, Sierra Forward is focusing our efforts on educating voters as to why this temporary measure is needed. Please donate to Sierra Forward to fund this effort.
