Sierra Forward Endorses Adam Schiff

for the U.S. Senate

“Democracy matters.”

With this sentiment in mind, Sierra Forward is proud to endorse Representative Adam Schiff in his campaign for the U.S. Senate, which aligns with our mission “to address the needs of our Foothill and Mountain communities by encouraging and supporting causes, campaigns, and candidates that will lead to mainstream solutions and fact-based decision-making in public policy.”

Sierra Forward’s endorsement of Representative Schiff results from his commitment to the most vital issue of preserving and strengthening our democracy and protecting the Constitution. Adam Schiff speaks to and embraces other key issues of concern to all Californians, as well:

On climate change Schiff argues that “We must invest in creating a green economy that works for all. And as other countries are investing at record rates, the United States continues to fall behind. For far too long, our heads have been stuck in the sand, and our politics at loggerheads. But we are experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change now. We can’t wait any longer.”

On the economy tax fairness and jobs, Adam Schiff’s position is clear, “First, we need to ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share. We must level the playing field.” Then with the revenue thus produced we can adopt policies that “Fund food programs and direct relief to end child poverty as we know it. Rebuild public infrastructure. Fight climate change and generate 100% renewable energy. And more.”

In conversations with Congressman Schiff, Sierra Forward has also learned of his deep concern over rural health care, and the need to find ways of funding rural hospitals.

Adam Schiff was there for all of us, gathering the facts about Trump and prosecuting the case, not for political gain as some charge, but because it was about the rule of law. In his powerful speech wrapping up the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump, Adam Schiff predicted that Trump would continue his attacks on our democracy. As the House’s Impeachment lead manager, Rep. Schiff addressed members of the Senate:

“We must say enough—enough! He [Trump] has betrayed our national security, and he will do so again. He has compromised our elections, and he will do so again. You will not change him. You cannot constrain him. He is who he is. Truth matters little to him. What’s right matters even less, and decency matters not at all.”

And then he said,

“Every single vote, even a single vote by a single member can change the course of history. It is said that a single man or woman of courage makes a majority. Is there one among you who will say “Enough!?”

Peter Minett of Nevada County and a leader of Sierra Forward puts it this way:

“Adam Schiff will be a consequential Senator from the first day he sets foot in that chamber. He has shown that promise from his earliest days in the California Legislature, as a forceful, articulate, and relentless advocate of impeachment of Trump, and as an investigator of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He will fight just as hard for California’s unique interests and needs as one of our two Senators.”

For the entirety of the Trump era, we have wondered about the lack of courage among Republican Representatives and Senators. Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger and Mitt Romney stood out because they were the exceptions among their GOP colleagues. Adam Schiff stood out among all members of Congress because he took forceful and necessary action in standing up against Donald Trump; because to him “democracy matters” most of all.

Sierra Forward’s endorsement is not against any other candidates but rather in support of the candidate who has expressed the simple yet profound statement that “democracy matters.” All the other issues will be meaningless if America abandons its constitution and civic norms. Adam Schiff knows that, and he continues to make the case wherever and whenever he can.

As one of Sierra Forward’s leaders, Kathleen Mintert of El Dorado County put it,

“This is our moment to step forward for democracy, to support the candidate who has the iron strength of character, who does not waver. He has shown who he is. Now we must stand up for him.”
